Rwenzori Women's Initiative for Community Development is a local CBO that was founded in 2002 by 5 female community development activists. The mission of RWICOD is to improve the living conditions of the rural and urban communities in the Rwenzori region. The focus of our efforts is to reduce the poverty, specifically with the women, in Busongora county, Kasese district, Western Uganda
LATEST NEWS: The publication of the Lhuyira (Lhukonzo) bilingual dictionary was accomplished by RWICOD in February 2007, thanks to Feed the Minds, a UK charity, who gave us a grant of Pound sterling 4,000.00 for this cause.
The book has been seen as a welcome relief by many schools in this area, although many have complained of delayed UPE (Universal Primary Education) government releases of money to enable them get their copies of the book. Interest for the book has been expressed as far as Butembo, North Kivu, and Congo (DR). Some copies have already gone there but we don’t intend to take there more because the current programme targets only the Rwenzori region in Uganda.
There are positive indicators that the book by end of second term which begins on 20th/May/2007 ending around mid August will be off the shelves. This will enable RWICOD to publish a second and more improved edition.
With this book in the hands of the Bayira community, the following is sure to be achieved;
- Perpetuation of the integrity of the Lhuyira (Lhukonzo) language which was badly impaired during the time the Bayira was ruled by the Batooro who imposed their language on them. So this is a positive rehabilitation effort for this language.
- School going children will find it easy to understand the meanings of certain English terms previously unknown to them by using this translating book.
- It will inspire the need for further research into the language owing to the controversy surrounding the spelling, syntax, phonology etc of certain words, a thing that will help advance the language further, and much more.
Updates on the progress of the project will be posted on our website from time to time.
